Visible from all the plain of Roussillon, the Canigou Peak (2785m) is one of the major symbols of the Eastern Pyrenees. Its ascent is a hike of high mountain very appreciated by the walkers. Access to the Cortalets or Mariailles shelters, starting points for the majority of hikes, is provided by 4x4 services. Before leaving, check with the Tourist Office of Vernet-les-Bains (0468055535).
At the heart of this massif, discover the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin du Canigou. This jewel of Romanesque art captures the visitor by the beauty of its steeple adorned with arches, its marble capitals, its abbey and vaulted crypt.
To visit it, take your pilgrim's stick as the walk to the site takes 40 minutes (transport service in 4x4 possible for people unable to walk: 0468059989 or 0650339576).
Restored in the twentieth century, the abbey is entrusted by the diocese to the Catholic Community of the Beatitudes since 1988. Masses and offices are open to all.
